Sedaris "Standing By"

When I read the piece of book David Sedaris, " Standing By", it was odd at first but understandable, I will tell you a brief information of this piece. At the beginning Sedaris wrote a thing that always happen every time you go to the airport, being late, or early for the flight you always seem to have a delayed flight or have to wait for other one the next day because you are late. Who wants to report anything that happens at airport? :But I suggest anyone that reads this piece to read it because it gets interesting later. He sometimes describes things that makes him pay attention, I mean it is hard to ignore. From his exprinece, when he is on the plane, he hears and see strange things happening like when a flight attendant asked them tp pray for the troops in Iraq, that one we do not hear very often, and is it appropriate? Sedaris doesn't think so, but why? I don't know, maybe he is not religious? Or he doesn't care about war, or politic? Who knows that one of flight attendant would be so open about what they do, I mean they actual told Sedaris something that anyone should not know! They actually do something strange while they walk down and up the aisle to check on the passenger, you think it is a normal thing for them to do, well yeah it is normal but what they do is not normal that we did not see. They actually fart when they walk up and down the aisle! They even have a name for it,'crop dusting', when I read this, I was puzzled, wondering why they do that? Can't they smell it, even though they can't hear it? That was the woman attendant that told Sedaris, so he asked a male attendant to see the difference, but amazingly he answers the same thing in different words. All of those people that he met is strange, a teenage girl with a baby, and a father that wears weird t-shirt, and orange hair. A woman in mid -seventies wear more that one bracelet, she was accompanying two of her grandchild. She has a attitude of a teenager. And two mens behind Sedaris complaining about the airline service, and politic. Also a man who dressed like a boy, Sedaris thought he was a boy but he is a man. A grandparents of the two teenagers was so proud, that they should not be, even a woman front of Sedaris disagree. At the ending, Sedaris experinced a weird thing, the flight attendant told them something that they shouldn't say that might be offensive but it is not.

  1. I like how you approached this summary as if you were talking to someone and giving them your opinion. In what situations might this kind of summary be useful? In what situations might an objective summary be useful?

You focus on a lot of the details of the text. This shows that you closely read the essay. How do these details relate to Sedaris’ overall purpose? Is it necessary to include more context with these details for someone who has never read the piece or for someone who doesn’t know what Sedaris’ writing style is like?
